dc.description"The coasts of Baja California Sur are considered as a pristine area although deposits of gold, silver, copper, and phosphorite have been exploited since the 19th century in the state. Copper enrichment has been mainly attributed to natural disasters of geological (e.g. volcanism and tectonic movements) and oceanological (e.g. currents and upwelling) origin. However, as a result of urbanization, there are potential sources of anthropogenic pollution in the peninsula, such as the establishment of marine and boat traffic. Copper is an essential micronutrient for life, but since it can catalyze reactions generating reactive oxygen species, it can also induce oxidative stress in animals and plants. The main route by which copper is incorporated to the organs and tissues of animals, including humans, is the diet. This paper discusses physiological and toxicological considerations related to copper in marine and terrestrial organisms, including humans."
