dc.description.abstracten"The loss of biodiversity derived from anthropic factors is one of the great current environmental concerns. The Cape Region, located at the southern tip of the Baja California peninsula, is one of the regions with the greatest biodiversity in the peninsula: there are several species with a geographic distribution restricted to that region. The “encino arroyero” (Quercus brandegeei), a woody perennial tree up to 20 meters high, is an endemic species of the region that is classified as threatened by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN). Among its main threats are the low rate of both sexual and vegetative regeneration, it’s very narrow distribution, as well as drought phenomena and possibly the consumption of acorns for both human use and domestic animals. Despite the importance of this species, due to the environmental services it provides and its contribution to biodiversity, before this work there were no studies regarding the production of acorns, their viability and the survival of seedlings. That is why in the present study the production and viability of acorns, as well as the growth of seedlings, were verified, considering different locations in order to analyze whether there are differences between the different distribution areas of the species. Three regions defined as Gulf, Pacific and North were determined in the range of the species. Within these regions, six collection sites were selected, which are distributed in the municipalities of La Paz and Los Cabos in the state of Baja California Sur. A total of 24 trees were selected and acorns were collected. Length, width, weight and volume records were made to analyze the morphology. Then, the acorns were put to germinate to determine the germination percentage, as well as the initial development of the seedlings. Finally, interviews were conducted with local residents regarding the use of this resource. The results obtained indicated that there is an important production of acorns and that the morphologies of these presented high variation within the localities for the four variables (length, width, weight and volume), however, in the analysis of the effect of origin, only an effect of the origin was observed in the weight of the acorns. Regarding the germination of the acorns, this was high with a percentage of 78.43%. An effect of provenance was observed on the growth of the stem diameter in the seedlings. This study shows the importance of local adaptation on a population scale, providing evidence that seed production, the time and success of germination and seedling growth are critical factors in the regeneration and recruitment of Q. brandegeei."es
