dc.description"This book contains a series of state-of-the-art applications of GIS modeling in raptor ecology and conservation. Ricardo Rodríguez-Estrella and Luis A. Bojórquez-Tapia compile selected papers developed from presentations at the Raptor Research Foundation meeting held in La Paz Baja California Sur, Mexico in 1999, as well as invited articles of recognized authors in raptor ecology. Collectively, the distinguished contributions address the application of spatial analysis and remote sensing for modeling habitat selection, and species distribution and abundance. Although the articles deal with raptors, the approaches can be used for similar applications using other biological groups. Thus, this book integrates key elements of applied spatial analysis for conservation planning. This book provides a valuable synthesis of the most relevant methodological issues in spatial modeling, and thus is useful for upper-level and graduate students, wildlife biologists, managers, and practitioners in the fields of biodiversity, conservation, and environmental planning. Ricardo Rodríguez-Estrella is an ecologist who has, worked mainly on determining the effects of human activity on ecological relationships of birds. His research focuses on basic animal ecology, landscape ecology, and biodiversity conservation through spatial analysis. He has been part of the Board of Directors of the Raptor Research Foundation and is member of the Academia Mexicana de Ciencias. Luis A. Bojórquez-Tapia is an applied biologist specializing in environmental planning and assessment. His research focuses on applications of decision theory approaches and spatial analysis in conservation biology and land suitability assessment. He is a member of the editorial board of Environmental Management."
