"Resumimos el estado de conocimiento de la fauna herpetológica de la Sierra de la Laguna hasta 1994, cuando fue declarada Reserva de la Biosfera, y de 1994 a 2011. Mediante revisión de la bibliografía se analiza cómo ha ido evolucionando este conocimiento a través del tiempo. El número de trabajos relevantes para la herpetofauna de la región pasó de 13 antes de 1994, a 43 en la actualidad. El aumento no es solo cuantitativo, sino que también se ha profundizado en la ecología, taxonomía o distribución y filogeografia de las 39 especies que viven ahí, nueve de las cuales son endémicas de la región y veinte de la península. En total 24 especies están en la NOM, detectándose la necesidad de actualizarla al menos para 5 nuevas especies endémicas, que anteriormente se consideraban dentro de otra especie de una distribución más amplia. Este aumento de trabajos no se relaciona con que la zona fuera decretada Reserva, sino que se da más bien por un aumento general de estudios sobre la herpetofauna de la península. Aunque sí que este mayor conocimiento realza la importancia de la existencia del área protegida, ya que han aparecido más especies de rango restringido, que enfrentan muchos riesgos de destrucción o alteración del hábitat. Identificamos la falta de mayor número de estudios sobre las especies endémicas y relevantes, y sobre las relaciones ecológicas de la comunidad, así como de las amenazas que enfrentan.""We review the status of the Sierra de la Laguna area (REBIOSLA) herpetology studies in two periods, before 1994, when it was decreed a Biosphere Reserve, and from 1994 to 2011. We analyzed the evolution of this knowledge through the available bibliography. The number of relevant herpetological studies involving the area increased from 13 before 1994, to 43 in 2011. This increase is not only in numbers but it also implies a deeper knowledge about ecology, taxonomy distribution ranges and phylogeography of the 39 species living in the area, nine of which are endemic to the region, and 20 are peninsular endemic. In total 24 of the species are included on NOM (=Mexican Protection) lists. After the review we detected at least 5 current new endemic species in the area which were not previously described (and as a consequence they are not listed yet); because they were cryptic species included inside another of wider distribution range. The increased volume of articles is not directly related to the creation of the Biosphere Reserve, but it comes rather from the general increase in interest about the peninsular herpetofauna. Nevertheless, all that knowledge enhances the necessary conservation of the whole area, because it highlights the need to preserve the new endemic species against the number of risks they face such as degradation or habitat destruction. We also identified a lack of further studies concerning the main relevant species, mostly about biology, community ecology, and conservation issues."
