dc.description"Mangroves provide multiple ecosystem services, including carbon storage and net primary productivity (NPP) that supports food webs, as well as carbon rates exported to adjacent systems. In this research, carbon storage and NPP (i.e. litterfall and root productivity: inputs to the coastal carbon budget) were assessed at different temporal and spatial scales in three mangroves of arid zones of the Gulf of California with different degrees of anthropogenic impactꓽ Balandra, Enfermería, and Zacatecas. Aerial biomass (i.e. trees: 13.6 to 31.6 Mg C ha-1) is at the lower limit of other global reports for mangrove ecosystems. The average carbon storage in mangrove soils (≤45 cm depth) of La Paz Bay is 175 Mg C ha-1, which is higher than the values reported for other arid zones (≥1 m depth: 43 -156 Mg C ha-1). Root biomass and productivity are at the lower of what has been reported in other studies. In both cases, it only represents ≤0.3% of the total below ground carbon stock. Total carbon storage in La Paz Bay mangroves’ represents approximately 10% of the estimated CO2 emissions of the city of La Paz, B.C.S. Mexico for 2020. The quality and provision of mangroves’ ecosystem services are more related to the structural arrangement of the alive aerial biomass than to its total coverage or anthropogenic impact. Finally, the organic carbon dynamic in the system is due to many processes at various spatio-temporal scales, including human activities and the interaction of biophysical elements inherent to the system."
