"La compleja historia geológica, el aislamiento geográfico, las condiciones climáticas y fisiográficas de la Región del Cabo, han permitido no sólo el desarrollo de ecosistemas únicos en la península, sino también un gran número de endemismos. Estas propiedades han sido motivaciones para la conservación del área, y han atraído la atención de científicos y naturalistas desde fines del siglo XIX. Existe un amplio conjunto de estudios que abordan distintos aspectos de la vegetación, desde rasgos florísticos, ecología básica de las comunidades del bosque de pino-encino y el bosque tropical seco, hasta propuestas del uso de los recursos forestales de estas formaciones. Con la declaratoria de reserva no sólo se incrementó el número de estudios, sino que se dio inicio a un plan de restauración y protección de la vegetación, impactando positivamente en los pobladores locales. Los rancheros de la sierra participan activamente en los programas de reforestación, y a través de estas acciones han tomado mayor conciencia de la importancia del mantenimiento de la cubierta vegetal para la recarga de los acuíferos de la sierra. A poco más de 15 años de la designación de la reserva, cabe reflexionar sobre las tareas pendientes, y la consolidación de líneas de investigación que permitan orientar las acciones de protección y aprovechamiento de estos recursos para elevar la calidad de vida de los pobladores del área.""The complex geological history, the geographic isolation, and the climatic and physiographic conditions of the Cape Region, have allowed not only the development of unique ecosystems in the peninsula, but also a large number of endemic species. These properties have motivated to preserve the area, and have attracted the attention of scientists and naturalists since the late nineteenth century. There is a wide range of studies that address different aspects of vegetation, such floristic features, basic ecology of the pine-oak forest and tropical dry forest, and management proposals. With the declaration of this biosphere reserve the number of studies increased, and began a plan for restoration and vegetation cover protection, impacting positively on local people. The ranchers are actively involved in reforestation programs, and through these actions have become more aware of the importance of maintaining vegetation cover for the recharge. A just over 15 years of the designation of the reserve, consideration should be given the remaining tasks, and the consolidation of research lines to guide the actions of protection and use of these resources to improve the quality of life for residents of the area."
