dc.description"El Golfo de Tehuantepec es considerado como una de las tres zonas centroamericanas del Pacífico Tropical Oriental con altos niveles de productividad primaria, derivado del desarrollo invernal de surgencias costeras y fuerte mezcla vertical por viento perpendicular a la costa, proceso que provee nutrientes a la capa superficial. En esta contribución se presenta una caracterización ambiental general (patrones de circulación predominantes a lo largo del año promedio, la configuración batimétrica y estructura termohalina), una descripción de los procesos que generan la producción biológica primaria y controlan su variabilidad, y se mencionan los principales recursos pesqueros de la zona, haciendo énfasis en su importancia relativa. Se concluye que, a pesar de que los niveles de producción biológica a lo largo del año son menores en el Golfo de Tehuantepec respecto de otros Centros de Actividad Biológica del Pacífico mexicano, éste representa uno de los pocos focos de enriquecimiento del Pacífico Costero Centroamericano, y en consecuencia un sistema clave dentro de la estructura ecológica de este gran ecosistema marino. Finalmente, se reconoce que existe una fuerte necesidad de incrementar los estudios enfocados a la caracterización del BAC del Golfo de Tehuantepec."
dc.description"The Gulf of Tehuantepec is considered as one of the three Central American areas of the Western Tropical Pacific with high levels of primary productivity. This is derived from the development of winter coastal upwelling and strong vertical mixing by wind perpendicular to the coast, a process that provides nutrients to the surface layer. In this contribution a general environmental characterization is presented (predominant circulation patterns along an average year, bathymetric configuration, and thermohalyne structure), a description of the processes generating the primary biological production and controlling its variability, and the main fishing resources are mentioned with emphasis in their relative importance. It is concluded that, in spite of the year round lower levels of biological primary production in the Gulf of Tehuantepec as compared to other Biological Activity Centers, this represents one of the few spots of enrichment of the Central America Coastal Pacific. Therefore, it is a key system within the ecological structure of this large marine ecosystem. Finally, it is recognized that there is a strong need of increasing the studies focused on the characterization of the Gulf of Tehuantepec BAC."
