dc.description"It is examined the hypothesis that the Biological Activity Centers (BAC) proposed for the Mexican northwest maintain relatively high and stable phytoplanktonic biomasses compared to the adjacent areas and the generality of the systems that include them (Gulf of California and western coast of the Baja California Peninsula). The information on photosynthetic pigments derived from the Coastal Zone Color Scanner (CZCS) was processed by interpolation to generate bimonthly images for the period 1980 – 1985. The averages by area were compared by a test of signs, and non parametric correlations between each area and the corresponding system were tested. The results confirm a high phytoplanktonic biomass in the generality of the BACs; not so their persistence at the interannual scale and specially at the effects from El Niño 1982 – 1983. Both the BACs and the adjacent areas reflect the variations of the system; nevertheless, the same conditions that distinguish the BACs seem to imply that this could be a bad indicator of the variability of the system. This would make necessary to consider also the adjacent areas in the design of sampling strategies."
