dc.description"La distribución de Chaetodipus siccus se encuentra restringida a Isla Cerralvo y a la Cuenca de Los Planes. Debido a que existen evidencias proporcionadas por los resultados de la aplicación de técnicas moleculares en marcadores mitocondriales (Cyt b y COIII) es posible considerarla como la primera especie microendémica de la península, lo que le confiere cierto interés desde el punto de vista de la conservación. La cuenca de Los Planes funciona como un área de aislamiento para la dispersión de C. siccus, es posible esperar para esta especie tenga poca divergencia genética, haplotipos compartidos y eventos mutacionales comunes. El propósito principal de este trabajo es la determinación de la estructura filogeográfica de las poblaciones de C. siccus considerando un área de distribución disyunta. Se colectaron ejemplares en toda el área de distribución a los que se les extrajo tejido para secuenciación. Resultados sugieren la existencia de un total de 43 haplotipos de Cyt b de C. siccus. Treinta y dos haplotipos están limitados a una sola localidad (74.41%). En la red es posible identificar tres haplogrupos principales. Se obtuvo que los haplotipos ancestrales se asocian a los sitio menos óptimos según la biología de la especies, mientras que los derivados a los más óptimos. Se concluye que C. siccus es una especie valida taxonómicamente, que la estructura genética es más complicada de la teóricamente esperable, y que a pesar de existir una barrera física impermeable la población no mostró una estructura filogeográfica como era de esperarse."
dc.description"The Chaetodipus siccus distribution is limited to the Cerralvo Island and the Los Planes Basin, the peninsular area in front to the island. Due to the existence of evidence, as a result to the molecular techniques applied on mitochondrial markers (Cyt b and COIII), it is possible to consider it as the first microendemic of the peninsula, which gives it certain importance from the conservation point of view. My hypothesis is that due to the existing link between different natural populations and the geological history of the area where they live, it is possible to identify relations between areas. Such is the case of the relation between the Cerralvo Island and the Los Planes Basin, which is unique in the Baja California Peninsula. For this reason, it is possible to expect minor gene divergency, shared haplotypes and common mutational events between the Chaetodipus siccus populations. The aim of this work is to determine the phylogeographic structure of C. siccus populations. The results suggest the existence of 43 haplotypes of Cyt b of C. siccus. Most of the haplotypes are limited to only one region (74.41%). We could identify three main haplogroups into the haplotypic network. The ancestral haplotypes are related to non-optimal ecological conditions sites for the species, while the most evolved haplotypes are associated to optimal conditions sites. We conclude C. siccus is a taxonomic valid species; the population did not show phylogeographic structure as we expected."
