The problem of the low availability of inorganic phosphate (Pi) in the soils causes a decrease in the production rates of the Zea mays L. crop, due to this it becomes necessary the search for new technologies aimed at improving the absorption of Pi while that are sustainable in the environment. The symbiosis of arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF) with plant roots has been shown to participate actively in the nutrition of Pi. In contrast, the evidence from recent years has established the existence of a functional diversity between the possible combinations of host plants and host fungi, and the environment in which they develop. Factors such as morpho/physiology, nutritional status, gene expression and symbiotic efficiency are some of the parameters that have been modified. During this work, we investigated the functional diversity in the morpho/physiological response and the expression of Pht1 genes from four maize cultivars associated with AMF (Claroideoglomus etunicatum), which developed at the limiting and high concentrations of Pi. Our results indicated different levels of growth responses and physiological changes among maize cultivars, which were based on the high and limiting concentrations of Pi, the colonization status of AMF or the interaction between the two factors. Similarly, between cultivars a variation in the regulation level of the genes ZEAma;Pht1;3 and ZEAma;Pht1;6, was observed, depending on the interaction between factors. Particularly, cultivars 3 and 4 showed higher phenotypic plasticity to both growth and physiological modification responses. On the other hand, maize plants colonized by AMF at 75 DDT maintained an increase in growth variables such as area and weight leaf (8.25 and 6.1 %, respectively), while reducing the dry weight of the root by up to 10 %. Probably these modifications are part of a mechanism in which AMF-associated roots reduce the energy and carbon expenditure used in the development of long roots, replacing it with the extra-radical mycelium of AMF. Likewise, a higher amount of aerial biomass could be linked to a response of plants by increasing the capacity of photosynthesis and the synthesis of carbon compounds that are necessary to maintain the symbiosis with AMF. The results of this research will contribute significantly to elucidate the patterns of functional diversity associated with the morpho/physiology and expression of Pht1 genes, between host plants of the same species and HA.
