Shrimp aquaculture is affected by diseases that cause economic losses. It is well known that environmental conditions, pathogens and nutritional status affect the immune system of penaeids. In this work Litopenaeus vannamei was submitted to different levels of oxygen (acute hypoxia) and normoxia (5 mg O2/L) to understand how some immune variables, such as proPO system, α2M (α2-Macroglobulin), lisozyme, NOS (Nitric oxide synthase) and THC are changed under these conditions. After an acclimation period (28°C, 35‰, pH 8), 200 organisms were submitted to exercise in an 800 L tank for 2 h. After this treatment they were exposed to acute hypoxic and normoxic conditions. When the oxygen reached 4, 3, 2, 1, 0.5, and 0.5 mg O2/L the organisms were sampled, controls were obtained from non exercised organisms, exercised and under normoxia. At each level oxygen, temperature, pH, salinity, ammonia, urea, nitrites and nitrates were measured inside each tank. All the organisms were bled to measure lactate, glucose, protein, cholesterol, activity of Tot PO, PO proPO, α2M, lisozyme, and NO2/NO3 as an indicator of NOS activity on haemolymph. Although protein and cholesterol levels were neither affected by hypoxia nor exercise, the results showed that the lactate, glucose, Tot PO, PO, proPO activity, lisozyme and CTH are reduced when dissolved oxygen is below 0.5 mg O2/L. At this point lactate and glucose reached the maximum level caused by the activation of the anaerobic pathways. Under this energy deficit condition the activity of TotPO, PO, lisozyme and THC were reduced. The inhibitory activity of α2M was modified by exercise and by hypoxia with the possibility that this macroglobulin is participating in the protein metabolism, under these conditions. Finally the levels of NO2/NO3 on haemolymph were not changed by hypoxia but they were by the exercise suggesting that NOS activity is involved in neuronal and cardiovascular regulation. In conclusion, some parameters of the L. vannamei immune system are affected by hypoxia and exercise, both causing energetic stress in the organisms.
