dc.description"The control of the Colorado River is considered one of the factors that caused the population decline of the totoaba (Totoaba macdonaldi), a threatened species endemic to the Gulf of California. Before 1935, water from the Colorado River flowed freely and discharged into the Upper Gulf of California. It has been documented that the adult totoaba migrated to their spawning ground in the river delta seeking brackish water from the estuary. The diversion of water of the river started during the 1930s causing ecological alterations in the spawning and nursery grounds of the totoaba, and although the river delta is considered a negative estuary, adults still return every year to reproduce in the delta. The juveniles then remain in their nursery ground. We do not yet know the specific effects of those environmental changes on the first stages of this species. We have analyzed the distribution and abundance of juvenile totoaba in relation to the salinity, depth, and temperature. Surveys of juvenile totoaba were made during July and August from 1991 to 1996, in 1999, and from June to November in 1996. Before each trawl CTD equipment was deployed to measure water salinity, depth, and temperature. We estimated the catch-perunit- effort (CPUE: juveniles km-2) as the relative index of abundance and correlated this with the mean values of the recorded variables in the catch sites of juveniles during July and August. We used a regression analysis to assess the relative effect of the environmental variables on the juvenile totoaba. The mean annual CPUE was correlated with the discharge of the river flow and with the annual precipitation in the region. Growth rates and the relative condition factor were estimated with the dates from June to November in 1996. We used the stepwise regression analyses to assess the relative effect of the environmental variables on growth rate in length and the relative condition factor. Juveniles from 150 -to 315 - mm total length were recorded in water with salinity between 35.3 and 39.5 in July and August. We found no significant relationship between the CPUE of the juveniles and salinity, nor of annual mean CPUE of the juveniles and its relationship to the river flow or precipitation. The highest annual CPUE of the juveniles was in 1991 (34 juveniles km-2) and the lowest in 1995 (6 juveniles km-2)..."
