dc.description"La sierra La Laguna se localiza en el extremo sur de Baja California Sur, México. Constituye el macizo montañoso más elevado de la entidad. Por su aislamiento geográfico y por las condiciones climáticas particulares, la sierra La Laguna es una de las regiones de la península con mayor diversidad y endemismo. En ella se desarrollan ecosistemas únicos en el ámbito peninsular y regional, como lo son la selva baja caducifolia y el bosque de pino-encino. Además de su importancia biológica, esta serranía constituye la principal zona de captación de agua de la entidad, y provee de este recurso a la mayoría de la población sudcaliforniana. Sus laderas y cañadas son guardianes de vestigios de las culturas cazadoras –recolectoras de esta zona del país, además de concentrar el mayor número de rancherías sudcalifornianas que remiten a la identidad regional. Por sus valores biológicos, hidrológicos y culturales, gran parte de la sierra La Laguna fue protegida por un decreto de Reserva de Biosfera. Desde su creación hasta la actualidad se han logrado muchos objetivos de conservación y de desarrollo de las comunidades humanas que ahí se establecen; sin embargo, aún existen viejos problemas y nuevos retos. Entre las amenazas actuales más importantes se encuentran los mega-desarrollos de minería metálica a cielo abierto para la explotación de oro, estos proyectos afectarán alrededor de 1,000 ha y generarán grandes volúmenes de material y de sustancias peligrosas para la vida humana y silvestre, por lo que son incompatibles con los objetivos de conservación de esta zona."
dc.description"The Sierra La Laguna is located at the southern tip of Baja California Sur, Mexico. It is the highest mountain range of the state. By its geographic isolation and the particular climatic conditions, the sierra La Laguna is one of the regions with greater biodiversity and endemism of the peninsula. In it the unique deciduous forest of the peninsula and the only pine forest of the state are developed. In addition to its biological importance, this mountain is the main water catchment area of the region, and provides water for most of the Baja California Sur inhabitants. Its slopes and ravines are guardians of traces of hunter-gatherer cultures, and this sierra concentrates the largest number of ranchos of southern California, which refer to the regional identity. By its biological, hydrological and cultural values, a large extent of the sierra La Laguna has been protected by a decree of Biosphere Reserve. From its creation until the present time have been achieved many objectives of conservation and development of the human communities; however, there are still old problems and new challenges. Among the most important current threats are the mega - developments of open pit mining, these projects will affect about 1,000 hectares and generate large volumes of material and substances hazardous to human and wildlife, so which are incompatible with the conservation objectives of the area."
