dc.description"Mangroves on the Baja California Peninsula display distinct characteristics; one of the most evident is the small size of individual trees in the populations. Our objective was to determine how micro-topographic conditions became a factor to determine the structure and composition of mangrove stands. The vegetation was analyzed at three locations, each with four micro-topographic conditions: eashore (CO), channel (CA), permanently-flooded zone (IP), and seasonally-flooded zone (IT), in a gradient starting at the shoreline. Vegetation traits were a number of plants per species, a number of stems per plant, average height of individuals and species, and the summatory function for stem diameter per species. Our results show that Laguncularia racemosa is the dominant species at CO, Rhizophora mangle in CA and IP, and Avicennia germinans in IT sites, respectively. In consequence, the series sea to land of the mangrove stands in the Gulf of California are L. racemosa - R. mangle – A. germinans, a distinctive feature in relationship with the mainland stands. The structural analysis showed that the basal area of the stems per surface unit could be of the same level than that of the tropical mangrove stands. In soil samples, the highest percentage of clay occurred in seasonally-flooded areas (IT)."
